Tapering
Today is the first day of our taper for the Cochise County Classic. We’ve never really had to do this before. To be honest, it’s really weird. We’re not allowed to train on our bikes very much, and when we do, we have to ride really really slow and not go very far. We rode up to the biosphere on Sunday, and it didn’t take long for us to start goofing off on our bikes. You...

Going Independent: Taking the Plunge
When I was 14 years old I started my first business. I won’t say it was the most ethical business… I would write college level research papers for my brother’s friends at $10 a page. It wasn’t a bad way to make money. When I was 15 I started my second business; burning and selling CDs at $5 a piece. It more than covered the cost my brand new external CD burner (a fairly...
New Bikes; Big Mountains
Recently, I started working at Fairwheel Bike shop in Tucson. I only work there a few hours a week, and help out in the shipping room. In return, I get hooked up with cycling product at cost, which is a lot cheaper than I’d be paying for it normally. When I started cycling a couple of years ago, I noticed a Cervélo Soloist frame hanging on the wall at Fairwheel. At the time, it was way...

Puke Hill
Every Wednesday we go out and do hill repeats. It’s a fairly simple concept, go find a hill, then ride up it as fast as you can, as many times as you can before your legs give out. The fun part is going around town and checking out different hills every week. Last week I heard about a hill in town called “Puke Hill”. This seemed like a direct challenge… a hill so tough...
Back in the Heat
So I arrived back in town a couple of weeks ago; I was *not* ready for the heat! The cool cloudy weather of San Diego was a horrible primer for the searing heat of the summer desert sun. We’ve been having to get up at as early as 3am to make sure we’re out and back before it gets too hot. There’s been a lot to adjust to, other than the heat. We’ve decided that we have a...

Training in San Diego
About two weeks ago I landed in San Diego to stay for five weeks and train on the bike. The weather here is incredible. It blows me away every day how nice it is. The high here has been hovering right around 70 degrees, which is lower than the lows out in Tucson. I hear summer is in full swing in the Sonoran Desert, with high’s of 110 or more. I’ve been staying with my aunt and uncle...
Learnin' from the pros
The other day I was watching video of my two favorite riders, Thor Hushovd and Heinrich Haussler. I like to watch my favorite’s ride and try to pickup on little things, like their form, positioning, when they attack or when they sit back. The big thing I noticed was their posture on the bike. I usually ride with my arms and back straight up and down, that way most of the weight of my upper...

Dog Days of Summer
Man! It’s gettin’ hot in Tucson! We did a ride up to Saddlebrook a couple days ago, and it hit 98 degrees! That was an interesting ride… it started out at my house downtown, then moved north on Stone. We passed a salvage yard early in the ride and all got startled by a German Shepard. We were cruisin’ at a steady 25mph and we hear this loud bark and growl to our right. This...
When the pavement ends, the wind keeps going
Bill and I had been talking about doing a really big ride; we wanted to do over 100 miles. We plotted out a route that went up Oracle, out to San Manuel, and around the far side of the Catalinas, back to Tanque Verde and back home. It was gonna be just about 110 miles door to door and we figured it would take us about 6 hours. So Saturday morning we woke up bright and early (5:00am), and got our...

Learning to Race, Part 1: Bittersweet Race
We raced The Tour of the Tucson Mountains on Sunday, and it was amazing. The experience of the race was different for each of us on the team, so we’ll each tell our own stories our own ways. Mine will be a multi-parter, I’ve got way too much to say in one post. We started really gearing up for the race about two weeks ago. We were excited to put our training to the test and see how...
Sometimes Things Happen
Man o man. 6 weeks sure do go by fast… If you look at the post dates you’ll notice there was a little bit of a lull there in March. “Lull” as in, there wasn’t a single post. Sorry about that. We’ve still been training, and training hard. We did an 80 mile ride on Saturday, and do at least 20 miles a couple times a week during the week. We’ve been...

My first "very hard" week.
Yesterday was my first day of a “very hard” StrengthEngine week. They’re not kidding with that label, they say “very hard”, and they mean it. I decided to go for a short bike ride today, no more than 10 miles, just to keep my legs loose, and almost fell off my bike! My legs were so tired it took awhile to get them to pedal. This is something we’ve been working...
Proper rest makes a real difference
Early last week two members of our team got a head cold, so we decided to stay off the bike Tuesday and Thursday to heal up, but we kept going to the gym. This week was a “Medium Hard” week on my StrengthEngine program, which is a little bit of a rest week. The combination of the days off the bike and the rest in the gym made an incredible difference. After 2 weeks of intense riding...

Introducing the Test Team
About 2 years ago I decided I needed a distraction, so I hopped on Craigslist and bought a mid 90s low end road bike for $200 and starting going for rides a few times a week. My first ride was about five miles long. Within six months I was riding about seventy miles once a week. About a year ago I decided it would be fun to enter a race, so I chose The Tour of the Tucson Mountains, 86 miles....

This article is gonna talk about setting up Ruby, RubyGems, SVN, Git, Rails and MySQL for Snow Leopard. Are your friends making you fat?
This article in the New York Times is fascinating. A review of a study concluding the effects and influence we can have on our friends and social connections. Next time you’re in a bad mood, want to light up a cigarette or you want to skip the gym, think of the effect you could be having on those around you, and more importantly, the effect on people you’ve never even met. Are your...

First SPUC update!
In order to keep myself on task with all my little programming projects (The LPP?), I joined the SPUC (Secret Project Update Club). I’ll post updates once a week. This week, introductions: Codename: Stars - I started this project about three weeks ago. I got some of the basic tests and things worked out, and an idea formed in my head. I’ve had to revisit the organization several...

Keeping track of tickets in Git
Here at Bookmans, our development flow works in stages. We code locally, push to a staging server, and move from the staging server to the live server. To manage issues we have a ticket management system setup in ActiveCollab, where tickets are assigned a number by project. A few days ago I pushed about five tickets to the staging server for review. @tilopa checked ‘em out, and told me...
